Actually, let’s go back a bit first: why start a fitness blog?
Well, for one, it could be if you have something valuable to offer. You might be a beginner wanting to share your fitness journey or a seasoned pro with serious insights that may be helpful for fitness enthusiasts, bodybuilders or those interested in simply losing weight.
But why? Why would you sit for hours sharing your experiences and expertise if it’s little more than a labour of love? Well, for one, starting a fitness blog is a great way to keep track of your progress, stay motivated and share your opinions with your followers.
Here are some of the steps you can follow to get an initial head start.
1. Choose your speciality
For a start, you can play the vocal beginner. Remember, there are loads of people starting their fitness journey and most are embarking on this alone. They might be anxious, self-conscious and confused about where to go and what to do.
So be the anxious, self-conscious, confused beginner in your blog; take on the persona of someone they can relate to; someone confronting all the issues a first timer confronts and find the answers. Don’t be afraid to use humour and be a little self-effacing as you’ll only endear yourself to readers and build a bigger following.
Remember, there are a lot more novice fitness enthusiasts out there than there are supreme gym athletes. Relate to them, create a rapport, sympathise with all their start-up issues no matter how trivial they seem.
At the other end of the spectrum, you may have serious expertise to share in a notable fitness niche. Do try to find a niche; you’ll do a lot better specialising in key areas you can truly excel in than trying to be a fitness encyclopedia and impressing no one.
2. Decide on your blog location
Will you create your own website? You certainly don’t need to as there are a whole bunch of user-friendly host sites that let you build your own blog from scratch. You don’t even need to be an expert on HTML as Wordpress is easy for even novice bloggers to master.
3. Plan out your content
And no, that doesn’t mean sitting down and asking “What shall I write about today?” You need a clear and strategic blog plan, a cohesive plan that works as a unit each time you add a post.
How often will you write? Daily? Weekly? The more fresh content you post, the more your posts will rank on Google and draw new visitors/readers to your blog.
4. Funnel your readers
And it is basically a funnel you want to create. At the top of the funnel are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and any other social media you use to spread the word; all offering a ton of new readers into the funnel and delivering them to your site.
5. Build your readership
And that comes down to a cycle of attracting new readers via social media and keeping fresh, insightful blogs coming.
Remember, the more new content you can post, the more frequently loyal readers will return. The less content you post, the quicker they’ll lose interest and go elsewhere.
Now the obvious question... Why go to all this trouble? Well, there’s yet another rewarding reason.
6. Start making money from your blog
If your blog builds a loyal readership and high enough traffic flow, money will start to find you in the form of companies wanting to cash in on your success. They will be companies allied to your fitness niche wanting to leverage off your traffic flow by posting ads on your blog.
And they’ll pay you for this privilege; often extremely well if enough people click through to their offer.
