Hi, I am Yusuf, and I work at the Edge Health Club in Casuarina, Darwin City, as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor.
My philosophy is to be a friend and mentor to my students, the same way my teachers and coaches were for me. I grew up in South Africa, where meaningful experiences shaped me into who I am today, and I emigrated to Australia in 2013. I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘top student’, but I worked hard to do well. I played almost every sport available; tennis, table tennis, soccer, rugby, swimming, chess, hockey, discus, 100m and 200m sprint, karate, boxing, and Muay Thai. It was my way of escaping from the world.
Sports gave me confidence and belief. I felt like I could achieve anything when I competed. It came naturally to me, far more than academics, and I wanted to know why. This led me to research human anatomy and behaviour. From there, I studied a Diploma of Psychology.
During a gym session, I realised there was no reason I shouldn’t turn my hobby and passion into a career. Why not take all I have learnt academically and athletically to bring out the best in something I actually enjoy? Now, my mission is to coach people on why their body functions the way it does and bring out the best in their fitness goals through proven methods and proper education.
My favourite part of personal training is when a student or client achieves a goal they’ve wanted for a long time. Whether it’s losing weight, building strength, or being able to move without pain. I am ecstatic to be part of their journey.
I partnered with AIPT, so I could be readily available to students. To offer a hand in completing their course. I want to help kickstart them into their dream career.
“I ask them, ‘why not?!’ It may sound naïve to say that it worked for me and that it may work for someone else. However, if you are really willing to take the leap, with the right guidance, then why not do so?”
