When studying the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness, you’ll choose one of two specialisations based on your career aspirations:

  • Group Exercise Instructor – People who graduate with this specialisation are ready to deliver group exercise sessions designed for clients across a range of ages and fitness levels. These sessions could be freestyle, pre-choreographed, or circuit-style.
  • Gym Instructor – People who graduate with this specialisation are equipped to provide tailored client assessments, assist gym members with correct technique and equipment usage, and develop/demonstrate fitness programs. You’ll also have the skills to supervise a facility or service, keep a fitness centre clean and well-maintained, and handle a range of customer enquiries.

This course also helps you develop a comprehensive understanding of fitness and training fundamentals (such as anatomy and physiology principles), equipping you to be a highly valuable member of any gym staff. You’ll also learn the latest in healthy eating trends and motivational strategies, allowing you to help members succeed on their health and fitness journeys.

With AIPT, you’ll enjoy flexible course delivery. The practical components are delivered by real fitness professionals in real gyms, while you can complete the theory elements of the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness online from the comfort of your home.

Important Information

Entry Requirements

  • Education: You’ll need to have completed year 10 or equivalent (i.e. a qualification at Certificate II level or higher, or 2 years of industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication).
  • Minimum age: You need to be at least 16. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian will need to sign your enrolment form.
  • Residency status: You need to be a permanent Australian resident or equivalent.
  • Working with children check: For the work placement portion of your course, you may need a current “Working with Children Check Clearance” issued by the relevant authority in your state/territory.

Resources Required

For the online part of the course, you’ll need regular access to:

  • A laptop or desktop computer with working speakers or headphones
  • High-speed internet such as broadband, ADSL, T1/T2 or fibre optic (dial-up access is not recommended due to slow speeds)
  • A suitable operating system (Windows XP or Vista 7 or above for Windows computers, OS X 10.4 or later for MAC computers)
  • An internet browser (the latest version of Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 7 or higher)
  • Software such as Flash, Adobe Reader, and Microsoft Word.

Course Outcomes

Depending on your chosen specialisation, the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness will prepare you to work as a:

Gym Instructor

Work as part of a team of fitness professionals in a gym providing advice on using gym equipment and writing exercise programs, while also contributing to daily operations.

Group Exercise Instructor

Deliver exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages/fitness levels. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. These individuals instruct and demonstrate complete exercise sessions to groups with limited individual interaction.

Student Selected Mentor

Choose your own mentor* to guide you through 30 hours of face-to-face practical. Theory components are completed online, in your own time.

*Your chosen Mentor must be approved by the Australian Institute of Personal Trainers.

AIPT Selected Mentor

30 hours of face-to-face practical completed with an AIPT Selected Mentor, a qualified Personal Trainer, who will guide you through your course material and provide you with hands-on experience, with theory components completed online, in your own time depending on your location and availability of AIPT Mentor.

Provide health screening and fitness orientation
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify client fitness requirements, administer a pre-exercise health screening questionnaire and advise clients of appropriate fitness programs, services and facilities.

SISFFIT002

Recognise and apply exercise considerations for specific populations
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise exercise considerations common to specific population groups.

SISFFIT003

Instruct fitness programs
This unit describes the performance outcomes, knowledge and skills required to plan, instruct and evaluate a variety of fitness programs and circuit sessions aimed at the health-related components of fitness.

SISFFIT004

Incorporate anatomy and physiology principles into fitness programming
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to incorporate an understanding of the human body structure and physiology into fitness instruction, programming and provision of fitness advice.

Provide healthy eating information
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide healthy eating information and support healthy attitudes to eating and body composition.

Instruct exercise to older clients
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan, instruct and evaluate exercise for male clients aged forty five and over, and female clients aged fifty five and over.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

Work effectively in sport, fitness and recreation environments
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a sport, recreation or fitness environment.

BSBRSK401

Identify risk and apply risk management processes
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify risks and to apply established risk management processes to a defined area of operations that are within the responsibilities and obligations of the role.

*HLTAID003

Provide first aid
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. *This course contains a core unit, HLTAID003 Provide first aid, which must be completed through an external RTO. Australian Institute of Personal Trainers has an agreement in place with Red Cross Australia (RTOID 3605) which allows students to receive training for this unit at a reduced price. Please note that the cost of this external training is not included in any of your course fees. Upon completion, you will need to submit a copy of your first aid certificate in order for us to process a Credit Transfer against this unit on your student record. If you have chosen your own third party provider, you must submit a certified copy of your certificate. If you have undertaken training with Red Cross Australia, you must forward Australian Institute of Personal Trainers the email you receive which contains the electronic copy of your certificate.

HLTWHS001

Participate in workplace health and safety
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure both their own health and safety and that of others. The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility.

SISFFIT007

Instruct group exercise sessions
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan, instruct, monitor and evaluate group exercise sessions, with or without music. It requires the ability to plan the selection, sequencing and progression of exercises and appropriate music to ensure safe participation in activities.

Instruct approved community fitness programs
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to instruct an approved community fitness program designed to promote wellbeing and increase physical activity levels in community groups.
